We are pleased to announce that Dr. Yutaka Kamada (Deputy Director General, Naka Fusion Institute, Fusion Energy Directorate, National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (hereinafter "QST")), will take office as Deputy Director-General for Science and Technology of the ITER International Fusion Energy Organization (hereinafter "the ITER Organization") on March 15, 2023.
The ITER Organization is an international organization established in 2007 in Saint-Paul-les-Durance, France, with the international cooperation of 35 countries in 7 parties of the world, to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy through the construction and operation of the fusion experimental reactor ITER. Japan has been participating in the project since the very beginning, has played an important role by being responsible for delivery of the key components and holding the position of the Director-General and Deputy Director-General of the ITER Organization also in the past, and this time, Dr. Kamada will take office as Deputy Director-General of the ITER Organization for the first time from QST since its inauguration in 2016. He will represent the ITER Organization for the science and technology activities by utilizing the knowledge and experience he has built up in QST.
For the success of the ITER Project, while continuing to work closely with the ITER Organization, QST will continue to fulfill its responsibilities as the Domestic Agency of the ITER Project in Japan by conducting steady procurement of components. QST is also responsible for promoting human contributions to the ITER Organization in cooperation with domestic research institutions and companies.
