Mutagenesis is known to be associated with carcinogenesis, and thus is closely related to the essence of life. The generation of mutation or cancer is known to depend on how radiation passes energy to the living cells. That is, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects are affected by the types of radiation such as γ rays and ion beams. We believe that looking into the mechanism that causes the difference by the types of radiation will enable us to approach the fundamental nature of life. In this research group, we aim to understand the mechanism of mutagenesis and carcinogenesis through searching for novel fast processes at an extremely small area caused by radiation in addition to conventional processes such as ionizations and excitations.
