Donations in FY2021 (April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022)

All donations received at QST are managed and operated under the framework of the "QST Future Fund." In FY2021, we received 37 donations totaling 15,945,295 yen, as well as one donation of goods (Photos to be displayed at QST Hospital). We deeply appreciate your generous support

Achievements of Activities by the Fund

Among the projects and activities carried out with the QST Future Fund in FY2021, we would like to introduce an overview of three significant projects.

  1. Research on Radiation Therapy Biology and Development of Radiation Therapy through Basic Radiation Medicine
  2. Promotion of IFERC Projects, IFMIF/EVEDA Projects, and Blanket Development Projects
  3. Modification and Creation of Catalytic Materials Using Quantum Beams

1.Research on Radiation Therapy Biology and Development of Radiation Therapy through Basic Radiation Medicine

Implemented by

Dept. of Charged Particle Therapy Research, Quantum Medical Institute, Quantum Life and Medical Science Directorate

Overview

This research focuses on biology related to radiation therapy and the development of new radiation therapies based on fundamental radiation medicine. The goal is to maximize the therapeutic effect of heavy ion therapy, expand its applicability, and advance the development of quantum scalpels as potential new radiation treatments. In FY2021, we purchased reagents and other research materials necessary for medical and biological research on heavy ion cancer therapy, ensuring steady progress in our research activities

Words of Appreciation from the Dept.

Thank you for your support of our research on radiation therapy biology and the development of radiation therapy. We aim to expand the number of diseases treatable with heavy ion cancer therapy and allow more patients to benefit from this treatment. To achieve this, we investigate how heavy ions trigger reactions in the human body and use these findings to develop better heavy ion cancer therapies.

In FY2021, we gained new insights, such as whether heavy ions elicit immune responses in the body and the synergistic effects at the cellular level when combined with new molecular-targeted drugs. These advancements are the result of your generous donations, and we are deeply grateful for your support.

2.Promotion of IFERC Projects, IFMIF/EVEDA Projects, and Blanket Development Projects

Implemented by

Rokkasho Fusion Institute, Fusion Energy Directorate

Overview

For the promotion of project activities at the Rokkasho Fusion Institute, we utilized the donations in FY2021 to purchase a programming robot and magnetic field observation devices as part of our nuclear fusion-related technology outreach activities. These acquisitions were made to effectively implement our outreach activities and enhance public understanding of our work.

Words of Appreication from the Institute

Thank you for your continued support of our research and development efforts. We will utilize the equipment purchased with your generous donations to make our research and development more understandable and engaging. We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to your continued cooperation.

3.Modification and Creation of Catalytic Materials Using Quantum Beams

Implemented by

Dept. of Advanced Functional Materials Research, Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute, Quantum Beam Science Research Directorate

Overview

Using quantum beams such as ion beams and electron beams, we are conducting material research that contributes to the development of next-generation power generation devices, such as fuel cells, through nanoscale material surface modification technologies. Our focus is on creating new high-performance electrode catalysts and developing seeds for future collaborative and practical research. In FY2021, we advanced the technology to introduce defect structures into carbon powders and other materials through ion beam irradiation with various mass numbers and energies. The donations were primarily used to gather information for advancing world-class research and development

Words of Appreciation from the Institute

Thank you very much for your support of our research on the creation of electrode catalysts for fuel cells using ion beam surface modification technology. Thanks to your contributions, we succeeded in optimizing the introduction of defect structures, thereby improving catalyst performance and elucidating the underlying mechanisms. Our achievements have been featured in the mass media and professional journals, accelerating the creation of new technological seeds for practical application research.
