nanoterasu
Panoramic photo of NanoTerasu (Sendai site)

Synchrotron radiation facilities are being developed through public-private partnerships. In addition to conventional material structures, visualization technology which affects the function of materials is expected to be used in a wide range of fields, including not only academic research but also industrial applications

Heavy Ion Beam Rotating Gantry Treatment Room (Chiba site)

A treatment room capable of 360° heavy ion beam irradiation on tumors from any angle. Since the dose can be concentrated on the tumor avoiding vital organs, it is expected to improve the therapeutic effect and further reduce side effects.

JT-60SA

JT-60SA Superconducting Tokamak (Naka Site)

The world's largest tokamak that conducts plasma experiments for the early realization of fusion energy (hydrogen fusion). The equipment manufactured by Japan and Europe was assembled at the Naka Research Institute. It is about 16 meters high and weighs about 2,600 tons

Quantum sensor operating at room temperature "Diamond NV Center" (Takasaki site)

Crystal defects (NV centers) consisting of nitrogen (N) and vacancies (V) formed in diamond function as qubits because they can remain in a quantum state for a long time even at room temperature. When green light is applied to the NV center, it emits red fluorescence.

Sugar transported to the inside of strawberry fruit captured by RI imaging (Takasaki site)

Carbon dioxide labeled with RI was fed to the leaves of strawberries, and the sugars produced by photosynthesis were transported to the fruit by PET-CT. It is an important physiological function that directly affects the sweetness and size of the fruit.

World's top class high-intensity laser system "J-KAREN-P" (Kizu site)

A laser amplifier that generates an instantaneous output of 1000 trillion watts (petawatts). When the laser light is focused at a single point, it reaches 1022 W/cm2 (10 zettawatts per centimeters squared). We are conducting research and development to realize quantum scalpels by laser acceleration.

NanoTerasu 3GeV Linear Accelerator (Sendai site)

A linear accelerator which accelerates a high-quality electron beams to an energy of 3 GeV. By adopting a C-band accelerator with twice the frequency of conventional acceleration tubes, the miniaturization of the device has been achieved.

QST beamline at SPring-8 (Harima Site)

A dedicated beamline for QST installed at SPring-8, a large-scale synchrotron radiation facility. We contribute to the development of quantum functional materials, environmental and energy materials, such as magnetic exploration, electronic structure analysis, and nanostructure observation with a depth accuracy of single atomic layers.

A diamond glowing red in the lungs of a mouse (Chiba site)

Bionano quantum sensors are next-generation measurement tools that continuously and precisely capture changes in temperature, pH, hardness, etc. in living cells. This sensor made of diamond was taken into the lungs of mice, made clear, and observed with a light sheet microscope.

Imaging of tau lesions in the brain of Alzheimer's disease (Chiba site)

Image of tau proteins accumulated in the brain of a person with dementia. The closer it is to red, the higher the accumulation. Based on the world's first tau imaging technology, we are promoting the realization of accurate diagnosis and differentiation of the three major dementias and the development of therapeutic drugs.

Integrated in vitro measurement device (Chiba site)

A device that measures radionuclides ingested into the body with high accuracy for dose evaluation of advanced radiation exposure medicine. By changing the position of the three Ge detectors at the top, the measurement site can be switched to the whole body, abdomen, and chest. Whole body measurement with a NaI detector is also possible. It is located in an iron chamber that minimizes the effects of radiation in the environment.

ITER Toroidal Magnetic Field (TF) Coil (Naka site)

A TF coil for plasma confinement that Japan is in charge of manufacturing in the ITER project, an international project that aims to realize humanity's first nuclear fusion experimental reactor. It measures 16.5 m x 9 m and weighs 310 tons, generating a high magnetic field of 11.8 Tesla.

High-Frequency Quadruple Accelerator for IF (Rokusho site)

Cross-section of a high-frequency quadrupole accelerator for the development of a fusion reactor material irradiation facility. A high-current deuteron beam runs through a gap (a few millimeters) in the center. At the exit 10 meters away, the deuterons are accelerated by a factor of 50.
