On November 5, 2026, in Tokyo, Shigeo Koyasu, President of the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST), and Mark Thomson, Director-General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), signed a framework collaboration agreement, formally launching cooperation between the two organizations.

In addition, the two organizations signed two implementing agreements to collaborate on research into the development and characterization of superconducting materials for fusion energy and large-scale accelerators, as well as the development and improvement of Plant and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) for equipment used in large-scale research projects.

QST, as Japan’s core research institution in the field of quantum science and technology, promotes research and development in quantum technology innovation, quantum medical science, quantum energy science and technology, and quantum beam science.

CERN, an Intergovernmental Organization, is a leading global laboratory in particle physics, providing for collaboration of a pure scientific and fundamental character, with participation by scientific institutes from all over the world.

Building on these agreements, QST and CERN will seek to further expand their areas of research cooperation and advance research and development by strengthening synergies through information sharing and personnel exchanges that draw on both organizations’ technologies and expertise.
