Indications
Carbon ion radiotherapy for intraocular tumors is performed in the following cases.

Although malignant melanoma developing in the choroid of the eye is a rare disease in Japan, it is common in the United States and Europe, where particle beam therapy (including carbon ion radiotherapy) is considered a standard treatment for this condition. Treatment of choroidal malignant melanoma is currently being performed in a clinical study at this hospital. A condition for participation in the clinical study is the absence of distant metastasis.

Carbon ion radiotherapy for choroidal malignant melanoma began at this hospital in 2001, and 216 patients had undergone the treatment as of 2017. The 5-year survival rate was 80.4%, and the 5-year eye retention rate was 92.8%. Neovascular glaucoma occurred as a side effect in 35.9% of patients and in 13.9% when limited to patients who underwent a treatment equivalent to the current treatment.*1
