Carbon ion radiotherapy for bone and soft tissue tumors

Indications

The eligibility of carbon ion radiotherapy for bone and soft tissue tumors is shown as follows.

1	Bone and soft tissue tumors	Localized bone and soft tissue tumors for which curative surgery is difficult due to local tumor status and/or patient’s unsuitable condition for surgery. Diagnosed through pathological examination A gross tumor on MRI and CT images No systemic metastasis No metal implantation in irradiated area.

Recurrent sarcomas after resection will be one of candidates. Recurrent sarcomas after radiation therapy need consultation.

A summary of the data from a multicenter clinical study of carbon ion radiotherapy conducted in 2015 (J-CROS) showed a 5-year local control rate (probability of no recurrence at the irradiated site) of 68% and 5-year survival rate of 65% for all 764 patients analyzed, including patients with a variety of histological types. In the case of bone and soft tissue sarcomas, however, the treatment results varied greatly depending on the histological type and malignancy grade.
