強い電磁場の下では、電磁場の強さが結合定数の小ささを補うことで、強い電磁場に特有の興味深い非摂動・非平衡現象が現れる。そのような現象の例としてSchwinger機構がある。Schwinger機構によれば、真空を強い電磁場にさらすと真空は電子陽電子対を生成しながら崩壊する。Schwinger機構の研究は場の理論の黎明期から始まる長い研究の歴史があるが、近年の実験技術の発展によって再び熱を帯びつつある。特に、レーザー技術の進歩によってSchwinger機構を実現するような強力な電磁場を人工的に作ることが今まさに可能になりつつある。また、重イオン衝突や初期宇宙などのさまざまな極限状況においても強い電磁場が生成されていて、Schwinger機構がなにがしかの現象論的な役割を果たしていた可能性が盛んに検討されている。
本講演では、Schwinger機構に関する最近の研究の進展について理論的な立場からレビューする。特に、講演者のこれまでの研究に基づき、電磁場の非一様性や偏極がSchwinger機構に及ぼす影響とそれに伴う新しい観測量(QED版Franz-Keldysh効果、高次高調波発生、スピン・カイラリティ生成など)について述べる。また、Schwinger機構の研究がレーザー物理の文脈を超えて、重イオン衝突や初期宇宙などの基礎物理の研究に及ぼすインパクトも議論する。
