abstract
The diffraction gratings for scientific measurements used in the soft X-ray region had been suffering low resolution and low diffraction efficiency as well as a complicated energy/ wavelength scanning system as the spectrometers. To overcome these difficulties it has been requested to develop an effective method to produce diffraction gratings with arbitrary varied line spacing by use of the two beam interference of high power lasers which had become practical at that time about 40 years ago. The authors had developed an advanced holographic recording method introducing an aspheric wavefront which enables control of the line spacing to cancel the aberrations sufficiently of the spectrometers as well as soft X-ray multilayer technologies to enhance diffraction efficiency dramatically. As a result it became possible to fabricate diffraction gratings having an unique varied line spacing grooves pattern varying by 10% or more, which is necessary for correcting the aberrations of soft X-ray spectrometers to attain high resolution and high diffraction efficiency in soft X-ray range. Spectrometers using the developed diffraction gratings are applied to synchrotron radiation beamlines and electron microscopes, etc., and contribute to the developments of lightweight and high strength steels for ecological automobiles and research on next generation safe and high capacity lithium batteries.
