The major role of the Department of Advanced Quantum Beam Technology is to operate safely and stably the ion-irradiation research facility TIARA (Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application), the electron beam irradiation facility and also the cobalt 60 gamma-ray irradiation facility, which are the basic facilities to carry out radiation application researches. The facilities are open widely to researchers of universities, public laboratories and industries so as to promote the radiation application researches.

Particularly the ion-irradiation research facility consisting of four accelerators, an AVF cyclotron, a 3-MV tandem accelerator, a 3-MV single-ended accelerator and an ion implanter, has been completed in 1993 in order to advance ion beam irradiation applications in the fields of materials science and biotechnology. Our department has contributed to the effective and efficient promotion of radiation applications through the development of beam technology like the cocktail beam acceleration, the microbeam technology including the single-ion hit system.

Our department will continue to improve the facility performances timely to cope with requirements and make stable management of the facilities as a center of the radiation application research.
