We would like to give you an overview of research and development activities in the Rokkasho site. QST is the Implementing Agency of the Broader Approach (BA) Agreement, designated by the Japanese Government. Research activities in the Rokkasho site under the BA agreement (hereafter BA activities) can be broadly classified into the following: 1) The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) project and 2) The Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activity for the International Fusion Material Irradiation Facility (IFMIF/EVEDA) project. The Rokkasho Institute also promotes domestic activities: fusion reactor engineering research including material development, blanket development and fusion reactor system research, and theory and computational simulation research.
The project teams, comprised of EU and Japanese researchers and engineers, play the central role in BA activities. QST, Japanese Implementing Agency, participates in the BA activities by acting as a host and also by contributing to research activities. Therefore, the IFERC and the IFMIF/EVEDA project teams are stationed in the Rokkasho Fusion Institute. Following the plans of the project teams, the Fusion Reactor Systems Research Department, the Fusion Reactor Materials Research Department, and the Blanket Systems Research Department are making contributions as the Implementing Agency and also contributing to domestic R&D activities in each field.
In June 2015, in accordance with the guideline of MEXT, the DEMO Design Joint Special Team, which is an all-Japan joint team of Japanese industry, government, and academia, was established in the Rokkasho Fusion Institute. Under the policy of Fusion General Strategy Task Force of the MEXT Fusion Science and Technology Committee, this Joint Special Team will be the headquarter for the establishment of the basis of DEMO, and play an important role for the development of DEMO in the future.
