Initial Injection of Negative Ion-Based Neutral Beams into a Reversed Shear Discharge

  • Conditioning for the negative ion-based neutral beam injection (N-NBI) system (500keV, 10MW) has been progressing on JT-60U.
  • A test injection of N-NB (350keV, ~2MW) into reversed shear discharges has been attempted as shown in the figure below. During N-NBI pulse, a large increase in the neutron flux and the stored energy have been observed, and a beta collapse appeared at t = 6.6s.
  • Further optimization of N-NBI is in progress to demonstrate the effective plasma heating and current drive.
