The Numerical Experiment of Tokamak (NEXT) project was initiated in 1996. The project is presently hosted and promoted by National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST). NEXT and several other R&D projects were transferred from Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) to QST on April 1st, 2016.
Driven by the rapid progress of computer technologies, the project aims at study of complex phenomena in fusion plasmas, which are reproduced on supercomputers based on the first principles of a plasma by effective use of IFERC CSC supercomputer, HELIOS and JFRS-1. The project covers three main topics, Turbulent Transport, Magnetohydrodynamics, and Divertor, and their integrated modeling. These simulation research activities enhance understanding of burning plasmas, and support JT-60SA and ITER projects from theoretical perspectives.
