JT-60U Reaches 1.25 of Equivalent Fusion Power Gain

Since June in 1997, experimental study on a newly installed W-shaped divertor has been conducted in JT-60U. From March 1998, experiments has been devoted to improving fusion performance of reversed shear plasmas with the use of the new divertor configuration. Successful optimization of the discharges with divertor pumping, feedback control of neutron emissions by neutral beam heating power etc has lead to the achievement of a high equivalent fusion power gain of QDTeq=1.25, which was assessed by replacing deuterium ions in the plasma with an assumed 50:50 mixture of deuterium and tritium fuels. This value substantially exceeds the previous record of 1.14 attained in JET as repoted in Nucl. Fusion, 1992. The operational scenario has been optimized with so high reproducibility that 15 discharges produced high QDTeq values in excess of unity during the series of experiment. Reduced impurity content by ~10% is a cause for improving the fusion performance in comparison with high performance shots two years ago.
