May 1997

OPERATION AND CONFINEMENT PHYSICS

Parameters used in the real-time feedback control of position and shape of JT-60U plasmas were fixed for the new divertor configuration. With the newly developed prediction code for equilibrium calculation, plasma configurations were examined for optimizing the discharge scenario toward the steady state high performance.

CURRENT DRIVE AND HIGH ENERGY PARTICLE PHYSICS

To increase ICRF power coupled to plasmas, stub tuner of the ICRF system has been modified to a type with higher withstanding voltage. Coupling studies of ICRF and LHRF for modified divertor configuration are scheduled soon after the restart of operation.

DIVERTOR AND BOUNDARY PHYSICS

Calibration and alignment adjustment of the measurement systems in the vacuum vessel were finished on May 11. The construction of the divertor modification was completed on May 15.
The detailed procedure in the first experimental week was discussed on the following subjects; 1) optimization of divertor configurations, 2) studies of gas puff characteristics(effects of gas puff location, time response, fueling rate etc.) and 3) divertor pumping characteristics (pumping speed, pumping test with fast shutter valves, relationship of pumping efficiency and separatrix location etc.).
Review of JT-60U experimental results obtained from February to November 1996 has been published in JAERI-Research 97-047, where 68 papers are contributed from the JT-60 Team.
